Regional Managers: When You Think you Have the Time, But You Don’t…
A Regional Manager is typically juggling ten properties, putting out twenty fires, and probably has at least one owner who thinks TripAdvisor or Brand Portal access, makes him a hotel expert. I am quite sure that that Regional Manager even has enough time to even read this article, let alone block off time to focus and do the deep dive on the needs and growth of a given property’s GM. But here is the part no one wants to hear:
If you don’t make time to support or grow the GM, you’ll always be stuck putting out fires.
Leadership isn’t a benefit or something “nice-to-have”. It’s the infrastructure that keeps your entire portfolio from crumbling the next time a department head walks out, or a revenue dip blindsides you.
And no, your GMs don’t need another playbook or pre-recorded webinar…They need real-world training and real-time coaching. They need to see what leadership looks like when the budget’s tight, the owner’s breathing down your neck, and the front desk just called… again. And yes, while GM’s can reach out to their Regional Managers, they already know how busy they are and no doubt, try to approach their tasks or problem needs on their own...which can and will, make a Regional Manager sometimes cringe.
That’s why I built Above The Lobby for Regional Directors and Operators who know what’s at stake but can’t always be there to coach. The need is finding a simple tool and resource to have in in the effort of resolving such issues, in a more timely, effective manner. My programs give GMs what Regional Managers discover there’s less time for, such as: mentorship, accountability, problem-solving, and the confidence to lead without burning out.
My personal message to Regional Managers and the executive team: “You can either keep running the same loop or start building a team that runs with you.” The next generation of leaders aren’t going to develop themselves...luckily for you, I’ve got the game plan!
